Using The VCR as a tool:

If you play a tape that you know has something clear on it and the picture is still bad then the problem is not the cable. Make sure that the tape is pre-recorded (i.e.: Walt Disney tape)

If there is ghosting on 3,5,9,11,13 or lines on17,18,19,21 on the Tv and thoughs channels are clear through the Vcr the problem is either the Tv or the cord that goes from the Vcr to the TV (see ingress below)

If the customer is having an intermittant problem try to tape it. Play it back when the problem is not happening. If the problem is there it is a ca problem if the problem is not on the tape it is not the cable and probably the Tv.

If lower channels are snowy on the Tv try the channels through the Vcr if the same channels are snowy it is the cable. If all the channels are snowy it is the Tv.

No Cable:

Are there any Flashes on Cablemaster, is there Audio, are other outlets working, does a tape work, are all the wires connected behind the TV.

channels searching endlessly usually means no signal getting to TV. Try a tape if tape works the cable is off. Try checking connections.

black or blue screen same as above but instead of searching screen goes blue

no picture, audio good on all channels (not a no Cable) try a tape if no picture must be the TV or the cable between the Tv and Vcr.

only channel 3 or 4 coming in clear Vcr is on

only channels 3,5,9,11 or 13 coming in and they are not clear if 3 is CFRN and 5 is CBC etc., they have No Cable and are picking up the antenna channels nothing above channel 13 Many people feel this is No Cable. But if the channels are coming in below ch 13 the cable is working and the CATV switch is off or not working.

Poor reception:

CATV Switch:

location- Front or back of TV, inside panel on front of Tv, remote control, under set-up, menu, mode.

setting- standard (std) or cable or on not IRC or HRC if possible.

function- changes the channels above 13 on the Tv to Vhf frequency (which is what cable channels are in)

Audio:

no audio on one channel check with PCC (if ch. 8,13 or 33 see below)

no audio all channels with good picture try to play a tape, the volume is down or mute is on or the speakers are turned off.

Channel 8 ,13 and/or 33 audio intermittant off or crackles SAP switch is on on the TV and needs to be turned back to Stereo or Main (if Sony). Sap is Second Audio Program and is not used very often. If something is broadcast in Two Languages you could listen to the second language if you turned SAP on. If it is left on you pick up stray carriers or high noise floor and get either no sound or crackles.

Low or High Audio on one or more channels check on office Tv and if you notice difference let Headends know. If not book trouble call.
